A contributory factor to callsign confusion not explicitly listed here is a failure of an Operator to give sufficient consideration to the RTF callsigns they use before starting to use them.

Experience has shown that larger operators need to have an effective callsign allocation system which will not produce conflicts between the operator's own flights as well as a proper process for responding to occurrences. Most surveys of the incidence of callsign confusion, including those mentioned in some of the 'Further Reading' given with this entry have found that a majority of all callsign confusion occurrences (which by definition will usually involve the largest operators in a given ATC environment) involve flights from the same operator. Fortunately, this makes fixing the problem easy, whereas fixing inter-operator conflicts is often more time consuming than the benefit justifies. Anyway, the key message for larger operators is to be proactive as well as reactive.

The conclusion for small operators is much the same except that they really have to invent their callsign policy only after checking out the corresponding policies of the larger operators they are going to encounter. And if they are involved in a significant callsign confusion event against a larger operator, they might as well just alter their callsign regardless of how long they've been using it, as this is quicker and easier than a larger operator doing the same.--John.Milner 17:34, 16 January 2008 (CET)

multi sector flights

Perhaps worth adding to the 'Solutions' section that multi sector flights which may have a single flight number are best given separate R/T callsigns. This covers the case where more than one aircraft is used to operate the sequence on a given day in association with 'P' suffix positioning aircraft. It might sound a bit far-fetched but I have personally experienced this and the confusion would have been avoided with use of different R/T callsigns.--Chris.stewart 22:38, 26 August 2008 (CEST)
